A CALL FOR SOBRIETY AND UNITY ON THE ISABELA CITY CRISIS

We are shocked and saddened by the Isabela City crisis that took place on April 13, 2010. As we analyzed the incident, we came to a conclusion that this is not an issue between Muslims and Christians. Rather, it is an issue of who monster-minded it and what is the real motive.

As we vehemently condemn whoever the perpetrators are, we are call on our political leaders to unite and sit together to address and resolve the Isabela City crisis through peaceful means. We likewise call on the Muslim and Christian populace and their spiritual leaders to share their part in maintaining our peaceful co-existence in our province for the safety and security of the Basileño.

As the curtain was beginning to fall on 2009, the on-and-off peace negotiations between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) resumed in Kuala Lumpur, with both parties agreeing to begin talks on the drafting of a Comprehensive Peace Compact that would resolve the Moro question.

The year, however, drew to a close without any far-reaching movement in the GRP-MILF peace process.

Human Rights monitoring group launched in Cotabato City

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/17 December) – The Mindanao Human Rights Action Center (MinHRAC), scheduled for launching on October 31 but reset to a later date upon the request of Commission on Human Rights chair Leila de Lima, will finally be launched this morning at the Pacific Heights & the Marqueza in Cotabtato City, with de Lima as keynote speaker.

MinHRAC is convened by representatives of the Moro civil society -- the Bangsamoro Lawyers’ Network, Institute of Bangsamoro Studies, Bangsamoro Women Solidarity Forum, Inc., Kadtuntaya Foundation, Inc., Consortium of Bangsamoro Civil Society, United Youth for Peace and Development, United Youth of the Philippines, Bangsamoro Center for Just Peace, Kangudan Development Center, Inc., Indigenous Peoples Resource Center, Al Ihsan Foundation and Moro Law.

Philippines: Displaced people at great risk despite ceasefire

Philippines has one of highest numbers of displaced people in the world; new report reveals ongoing arrests, beatings and electro-shock torture

More than 200,000 civilians in central Mindanao are still vulnerable to human rights abuses despite the recent ceasefire between the Philippine army and the insurgent Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), warns Amnesty International in a new report published today. 

The report, 'Shattered lives: Beyond the 2008 - 2009 Mindanao armed conflict', details the risks that hundreds of thousands of people face as they are forced to live in camps or makeshift shelters, sometimes surrounded by a heavy military presence.

As the armed conflict between Philippine soldiers and the members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) continues, residents are not only worrying where to get their next meal. They now wonder who could be taken next.

On the morning of 7 May 2009, five “bakwits” or internally displaced persons were abducted my men in military uniforms. The five were walking along a highway in Pagatin village as they wait for the distribution of relief goods by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
